Oldest Tennis Club in Finland – Tampere Tennis Club

14.03.2023

Tampere Tennis Club TaTS was founded all the way back in 1909, which makes it one of the oldest tennis clubs in Finland. The club is also one of the founding members of the Finnish Tennis Association, which was established in 1911. Today, TaTS remains a very dynamic and active tennis club – and also one of the biggest in Finland.

The heart of Tampere Tennis Club is located at the Tampere Tennis Center in the city district of Ruotula. The center was built in 1979 to house four tennis courts, but after several expansions it has become more of a multi-sport center these days. Currently the Tennis Center has 16 indoors tennis courts and 12 outdoors courts, 3 squash courts, 14 badminton courts, a multi-purpose hall, a gym and a functional training area, a space for table tennis and the latest addition of 6 padel courts which was completed at the end of 2022. This variety of disciplines and the hugely increased number of courts make the Tennis Center the biggest sports complex in the Nordic countries.

Tampere Tennis Club organizer in EMG2023

Tampere Tennis Club is a highly experienced tournament organiser. The club has been involved in organising the oldest continuously held ATP Challenger-level tournament in the world since it was first held in 1982. Last summer the tournament celebrated its 40th anniversary. We were also in charge of organising the European Youth Olympics Festival (EYOF) Tennis tournament in 2009 on the courts of the Tampere Tennis Center. The matches in the EMG2023 tennis tournament will also be played on those same top-quality clay courts.

Tampere Tennis Club is one of the most successful tennis clubs in Finland. In addition to the success in Finland’s national level tennis and winning league teams, several of the club’s players have also achieved great international success. Finnish tennis icon Veli Paloheimo (former ATP 48) has represented Tampere Tennis Club throughout his career. Former world No. 1 in doubles and Grand Slam champion Henri Kontinen also started his tennis career on the courts of the Tennis Center.

We welcome all players to the Tampere Tennis Center!
